As described in Manual for the Soul, A Guide to the Energies of Life, the 260 day cycle that forms the foundation for the Mayan Calendar is comprised of 20 trecenas (weeks), each containing 13 days. Within Mayan Calendrics each of the days represents a unique energy with a special meaning. Each of the trecenas has a theme, with the name of the trecena being reflective of the first day of the time frame.
The Ajaw Trecena: Dec.7-19, 2011

As the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder many people in the northern hemisphere search for ways to counteract the low light and falling temperatures. The Ajaw trecena that begins on Dec. 7th may provide some assistance in that regard. Aligned with the arts and revelry this is a highly creative time frame that begins with One Ajaw, representative of the initiation of “Full Sun” or “Full Enlightenment”. As the symbol of the “Divine Authority”, this day is often depicted by the face of a Maya Lord (as shown in the glyph above). Since the Aztec saw this divine light as a fully opened flower, this first day has also been termed One Flower. Since this first day was traditionally celebrated as the “day of flowers” it was seen as a joyful and highly auspicious time for “making merry” and extolling the virtues of creativity in all its diverse forms. With the patrons of this time frame being associated with dance, music, the creative arts, ceremony, and feasting this is certainly a good time to be getting ready for the holiday season.
Given the nature of this 13-day time period, which traditionally was associated with artistry and craftsmanship in all forms, it is not surprising to see that New Orleans was founded on the first day of this period. It seems that this magical city most definitely lives up to the energy of its birth since it always has time to “dance and be merry” regardless of what nature or human folly throws its way. As it turns out, on this current One Ajaw day (Dec. 7th) the National World War II Museum in New Orleans is opening an exhibit to commemorate an infamous Gregorian calendar event that took place seventy years ago on Dec. 7th – the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Although the attack itself was certainly horrific, this commemorative event will enable some of the last living survivors of that attack to share their personal stories, honour those who were lost, and celebrate the freedoms that were won as a result of the outcome of the war.
As One Ajaw kicks off this time frame in the middle of a week when leaders of the European Union are engaging in crucial talks associated with the economy and the future of the euro, let’s hope that this energy will help to bring forth some creative new possibilities for economic recovery.
As of Two Imix (Dec. 8th), the second day of this time frame, it will be precisely two Mars cycles (6 cycles of 260 days) since 160 nations agreed (in 2007) to dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. In 2009 the “International Day of Climate Change” coincided with this Ajaw trecena, at which time millions of people worldwide lent their voices to demands for stronger governmental action. As it happens, the conclusion to the 12 day UN Framework Convention on Climate Change currently underway in South Africa (with delegates from nearly 200 countries) occurs again under the influence of this Ajaw trecena, with the final day falling on Dec. 9th (3 Ik’). Hopefully the “enlightenment” force of Ajaw that influences this time frame will help the delegates (including those
representing the “big powers”) to reach agreement on measures that will adequately address the crucial environmental concerns that have such enormous implications for the future of this planet. Given the way it’s been going, they will need some of this trecena’s “creative fire” to come up with some new ideas.
Other significant events that have occurred in the past under the influence of the Ajaw trecena include the signing of the U.S. constitution in 1787; Abraham Lincoln’s delivery of the Gettysburg address in 1863; the discovery of gold in the Klondike, in 1896; the opening of Sun Records, that give birth to Rock ‘n’Roll, in 1950; the putting into operation of the first computer produced for commercial use, in 1951; the Korean War Armistice in 1953; the signing of the peace accord that brought an end to the 36-year war in Guatemala, in 1996; the lighting of over a million candles at temples in Indonesia as part of prayer vigils to end terrorism, in 2005; and the stoppage of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in July of last year – an event that, after 86 days of gushing, was the cause for worldwide celebration.
This time frame, governed by the sun, has also been known – at times - to bring more “heat” than is comfortable, as seen in 1989 when intense solar activity triggered major disruptions in global communications. A very similar situation occurred in 1997 when a massive solar storm sent an enormous cloud of ionized gas towards Earth’s magnetosphere during this time frame. In 1936 the most severe/intense heat wave ever recorded in the U.S. and Canada manifested during the Ajaw trecena, with a similar situation happening in parts of the UK during this time frame in 1990, and then again in 2009 when some of the highest temperaures ever recorded in Australia spawned some of the worst wildfires in that country’s history. In 2009 this situation occurred exactly once 260-day cycle after “priestesses” at the Temple of Hera in Greece used the sun’s rays to light the Olympic flame in the bowl of a parabolic mirror.
Hopefully, the return of this trecena will not only bring creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems, but will also bring warmth and good cheer as people prepare to celebrate the holiday season. As this current trecena unfolds, these are the energies that will come into being (days of particular importance are highlighted in red):
1 Ajaw (Dec. 7th) – the “initiation of Full Sun/Enlightenment”, the beginning of the trecena
2 Imix (Dec. 8th) – a dynamic type of energy often aligned with “world-making”
3 Ik’ (Dec. 9th) – the “activation of Wind/Breath/Spirit”; given that almost every day of this particular
Ajaw trecena is aligned with a month that is also associated with the wind, this could be either a
very “breezy” day, or a day that could involve significant communications. This is a cycle return of
the energy that initiated the U.S. declaration of war on Germany in 1917, exactly 113 cycles ago.
4 Ak’b’al (Dec. 10th) – a “defining” day associated with Night, Darkness, and deep esoteric
mysteries – this time aligned with the Full Moon and a Total Lunar Eclipse that will be visible
from Alaska and northern Canada to Australia, New Zealand, and central and eastern Asia. The
eclipse will last for 51 minutes. A Total Lunar Eclipse had also occurred under the influence of
4 Ak’b’al in 2004, and the spectacular Triple Julia Set crop circle appeared in Switzerland under
the influence of 4 Ak’b’al during the summer of last year.
5 K’an (Dec. 11th) – a “blessing” type of energy associated with youthful vitality
6 Chikchan (Dec. 12th) – a “six directions” type of energy associated with Lifeforce and Higher
Knowledge
7 Kimi (Dec. 13th) – “self-generating death” – a “return to Source” type of force that can turn
attention to “absolute foundations”, as when President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg address
under this influence
8 Manik’ (Dec. 14th) – in Maya tradition this was known as the Day of the Lord Deer –
a “resurrection” type of energy aligned with reciprocity; the second stage of Egypt’s Parliamentary
elections are scheduled for this day
9 Lamat (Dec. 15th) – the “outward projection” of leadership, as when U.S. women voted for the first
time on a 9 Lamat day in 1920
10 Muluk (Dec. 16th) – “foundational water” which can be a powerful “shape-shifting” force
11 Ok (Dec. 17th) – “inspirational love (or guidance)” – a Burner Day representative of heart, love,
fire, and passion; the birth energy of Terry Fox who definitely exemplified this energy
12 Chuwen (Dec. 18th) – “dedicated” play (or even mischief); a “timeweaver” type of energy than
can have a kind of “anything is possible” aspect to it; it can also be great fun (as on the 4th Annual
International Pillow Fight Day which coincided with the last time this energy came around, last
April); falling one week before Christmas this year
13 Eb’ (Dec. 19th) – “transformational vitality”; also the “seating” (beginning) of the Maya calendar
month called K’ank’in (new or precious sun); an energy that can trigger significant change, as in
the highly intense solar and heat related activities noted above, several of which have occurred on
13 Eb’; it seems that this can be reflective of the sun’s intense vitality, a vitality that, in the past,
has demonstrated an ability to “build up” over the course of this sun-related trecena and then “let
loose” on this final day
