As described in Manual for the Soul, A Guide to the Energies of Life, the 260 day cycle that forms the foundation for the Mayan Calendar is comprised of 20 trecenas (weeks), each containing 13 days. Within Mayan Calendrics each of the days represents a unique energy with a special meaning. Each of the trecenas has a theme, with the name of the trecena being reflective of the first day of the time frame.
The Eb' Trecena: January 28-February 9, 2012
Freezing rain storms, snow storms, ice storms, wind storms, solar storms, and even major floods - they all roared through during this past 13 days; so leaving behind the Kawak (storm) trecena will be a welcome relief for many people as this trecena did live up to its tempetuous reputation in many regions. This bring us to the Eb’ trecena, which has been affilated traditionally with renewed vitality and fertility. This can even be a time of exuberance as the patrons of this time frame, in Mesoamerican mythology, have been associated with feasting, dancing, and general celebration. In the past the forces in play during this energy frame have brought forth many new ideas, new visions of possibilities, and new opportunites. It is a time to forge ahead, to keep an eye open for fortuitous circumstances or options that may open the door for advancements on many levels. However, as the energies intensify towards the end of the trecena there is the potential for things to go awry, due to the “excesses” (including intoxification) that have been associated with these energies in the past. Nevertheless, there is the potential for this trecena to bring great benefits if one “goes with the flow” and works with these energies to bring forth fresh ideas that can open up fertile new options for exploration.
The beginning of this trecena (this time through) coordinates with the “seating” of the Maya month known as Pax, which translates as “drum”. This month is aligned with a jaguar deity, representative of the night sun, who is sometimes show in ancient paintings beating a drum, almost as if he is announcing something. Seen as a “messenger” associated with the great “Lord of the Milky Way” known as Itzamna to the Maya, representative of the “dew of life” that is the essence of Eb’, this deity’s appearance at this time may serve to augment whatever it is that this trecena is about to bring forth. As this deity is commonly associated with fire rituals, often involving incense burners, this joining of energies may enable the twin creative forces of fire and water to work in conjunction with one another at this time. This is similar to the type of fire/water energy that is in place on 8 Kawak, the eighth day of this time period, as could be seen in February of 2007, when Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the U.S. presidency.
Just as Obama’s announcement can be seen as a signal that opened up a new pathway, many other events have occurred during this 13-day period that have been “pushed through” by the pathfinding impetus of Eb’. These events include the initiation of the office of the presidency of the United States, after the election of George Washington in 1789; the launch of the Fraser River gold rush in 1858; the first inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln in 1861; the issuing of the emancipation manifesto by Czar Alexander II when he freed Russsia’s 20,000,000 serfs in 1861; the initiation of the vote for women in New Zealand in 1893 (the first country to allow women to do so); the beginning of the German and Hungarian Revolutions in 1918; the formation of the Nazi party in Germany in 1920; Margaret Thatcher’s election as the first British woman Prime Minister, in 1979; and the first democratic elections in Russia, in 1991.
During the last appearance of this trecena, in May of 2011, a massive fire roared through Slave Lake, Alberta, necessitating the evacuation of that town’s 7,000 residents, as it destroyed or damaged over over 500 buildings. That fire began early in the trecena, followed several days later by the devastation of the town of Joplin, Missouri by the gigantic EF5 tornado that wrecked close to $3 billion worth of damage in that region. More traditionally the end of this trecena has had a tendency to show what can happen when an “excessive” amount of energy is released, as seen in 1992 when a massive fire broke out at Windsor Castle, damaging or destroying over 100 rooms. It was the end of this trecena in December of 2004 that drew the attention of the world when a 9.0 earthquake ripped apart the ocean floor off the coast of Sumatra and sent a humungous wall of water crashing into 14 countries in Southeast Asia, killing over 230,000 people as it washed away entire villages and reduced some 400,000 homes to rubble. During the past few years, particularly during September 2010, some major weather systems have accompanied the end of this trecena. As this correlates with early February this year there certainly is potential for some sort of strong “pathfinding” weather events to recur. During this time frame these are the energies that will come into play (days of particular importance are highlighted in red):
1 Eb’ (Jan. 28th) – the “initiation” of “animating vitality”, the stream-of-consciousness, “find your
own path” type of force that kicks off this 13-day time frame; it was under this energy influence
that a strange blue spiralling light danced in the sky over Norway in Dec. of 2009, reportedly the
result of a failed missile test, at the time that the Obamas were flying to Norway in order for
Barack to receive his Nobel Peace Prize; two years before that the Orionid meteor shower
(associated with Halley’s Comet) peaked on One Eb’
2 B’en (Jan. 29th) – a dynamic type of energy aligned with personal authority, as was in place at the
birth of Queen Elizabeth I in 1533
3 Ix (Jan. 30th) – the “activation” of mystery and magic; the “darker” side of this energy can take on a
fierce “burning water” type of quality, as when Slave Lake was devastated last May; this time this
jaguar-related energy will be reinforced by the jaguar-related energy of the month of Pax
4 Men (Jan. 31st) – a “defining” energy related to the “high vision” of the Eagle; this “double solar”
energy is a Burner Day associated with “running with the fire”, an energy that can sometimes bring
a great deal of “firepower”, as seen in 1918 when massive revolutionary uprisings were underway
in both Germany and Hungary. In 2007, just after the Orionid meteor shower, an intriguing cosmic
event marked this day when the coma around the normally faint Comet Holmes suddenly increased
its magnitude significantly, in the largest known outburst by a comet.
5 Kib’ (Feb. 1st ) – a “blessing” or “precision” type of energy associated with the “Vulture’s” high-
flying ability to survey and its ability to “clean things up”, as when President Abraham Lincoln
was inaugurated under this influence in 1861, and when federal regulators in the U.S. seized
IndyMac bank assets under this influence in 2008, at the start of the banking collapse
6 Kab’an (Feb. 2nd ) – a “movement (or earth movement)” type of energy combined with the “all
directions” force of the number six, as when Russia held its first democratic elections in 1991, and
when Obama declared that the U.S.-Iraqi war had officially come to an end, in 2010
7 Etz’nab’ (Feb. 3rd) –“self-generating flint” ; this is the energy that sparked major solar flares in
2005; also representative of the “knife-edge” of discrimination, this energy spawned a Global Day
of Action in 2007 that involved anti-war demonstrations in cities across the U.S. and in many
other countries
8 Kawak (Feb. 4th) – “resurrecting storm” as in the “8888 Uprising” in Burma in 1988; in Feb. of
2007 Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the U.S. presidency under this influence
9 Ajaw (Feb. 5th) – an “outwardly projecting”, double-fire type of force associated with the full sun,
as manifested in the intense eruptions of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991, the eruption of
the Grimsvötn volcano in Iceland in 2011, and the 6.3 earthquake off the coast of Java in 2006 that
killed almost 6000 people, left 1.5 million homeless, and triggered volcanic activity in Mt. Merapi.
As Ajaw has also been associated with kings it is not surprising to see that Steve Jobs was born
under this influence. The idea of “enlightenment” is also imbedded in this idea, as reflected in the
appearance (in July of 2008) of the Avebury Manor Crop circle that supposedly revealed the 9
planet solar system as it will appear on Dec. 21, 2012.
10 Imix (Feb. 6th) – a “source” based energy aligned with birth; sometimes associated with idea of
“the exalted” person; as it happens this will be the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s
Accession Day (the anniversary of when she began her reign in 1952); her Diamond Jubilee
celebrations begin in June of this year
11 Ik’ (Feb. 7th) – “inspirational” wind/breath spirit, this time in conjunction with the Full Moon;
11 Ik’ was the energy in place when the first decree relating to Pope John Paul II’s beatification
was signed by Pope Benedict in 2009, and when thousands gathered to hear Obama speak in
Dublin during his visit to Ireland in May of 2011; this was also the energy in place on January 1,
2000 when millions of people celebrated the coming new millennium
12 Ak’b’al (Feb. 8th) – a “grouping together” type of energy associated with darkness, as seen last
May when the ash cloud from the Grimsvötn volcano grounded about 500 flights in the U.K.; and
when the devastating tsunami hit Southeast Asia in December of 2004
13 K’an (Feb. 9th) – transformational “generative vitality”; a powerfully exhuberant force that has, in
recent years, fomented havoc in a number of ways, as in the Windsor Castle of 1992; the L’Aquila
earthquake of 2009; the massive flooding in Tabasco in 2007, and in Guatemala and Australia in
2010; and the various hurricanes and windstorms in 2010 that hammered different places in
Canada and the U.S. at the same time as millions of workers in France and England were staging
