As described in Manual for the Soul, A Guide to the Energies of Life, the 260 day cycle that forms the foundation for the Mayan Calendar is comprised of 20 trecenas (weeks), each containing 13 days. Within Mayan Calendrics each of the days represents a unique energy with a special meaning. Each of the trecenas has a theme, with the name of the trecena being reflective of the first day of the time frame.
The Kawak Trecena: January 15-27, 2012

As we head into mid-January, the energy of the Kawak (Storm) trecena comes into play, which tends to be a strong catalyst, generally associated with benevolence. As Tláloc, the Aztec god of rain (known as Chac to the Maya), was considered to be an important influence during this trecena this is a time frame that was traditionally associated with fertility, as the rain gods brought the life-giving water that was needed for the growth of crops. However, these rain gods have been known to be temperamental, and they are not alone as patrons of this trecena. There is also a powerful wind god involved, and that combination can often kick up a storm, as it holds the potential to bring in clouds, lightning, thunder, and heavy rainfall that can create an intense situation that can be either a “water blessing” that can purify and transform, or some sort of complete disaster.
Unfortunately, during the summer of 2005, one of the worst-case scenarios related to this wind-rain-storm potential manifested in the form of Hurricane Katrina which formed during the fifth day of this trecena, built up speed and hit the Mississippi delta on 11 Muluk (associated with “change” in conjunction with “water”) and then dissipated as the trecena came to an end. Grabbing the attention of the world as it closed in on New Orleans and the surrounding region, this became one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes ever to reach the Gulf coast. On that 11 Muluk day over 280,000 homes in that region were either damaged or destroyed as a 25 ft. storm surge inundated the delta. Over 1800 people were killed, and some 23,000 acres were devastated, at a cost of over $100 billion, making this the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
As bad as that was, this energy was not done at that time, as yet more havoc was caused when it returned one cycle later, in May of 2006. At that time a major system formed on the 6th day of the Kawak trecena and produced continuous heavy rain for several days so that by the 11th day (11 Muluk, the same water-oriented energy as when Katrina struck) a state of emergency was declared as New England experienced some of the worst flooding in that region in 70 years. When that same energy returned in July of 2008 the Osoyoos area of British Columbia was pummelled with golf-ball sized hailstones on the 11 Muluk day when a fierce lightning storm caused major destruction to fruit crops.
During the Kawak trecena’s last visit, in May of 2011, all eyes were again on the Mississippi River as thousands of people were forced to evacuate from its flood plains as the crest waters made their way down the river to the Gulf. On May 10th the river crested near Memphis, at its highest point in 80 years. It was 11 Muluk – exactly 8 Tzolk’in cycles since Hurricane Katrina struck – when Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal indicated that some 3 million acres could go under water if the Morganza Spillway had to be opened to relieve the threat to Baton Rouge and New Orleans (the spillway was opened several days later).
While the “coincidence” (or not) of such events occurring under these energy influences does not necessarily mean that a similar type of event will happen each time these forces are in play, it is rather astonishing to see such parallels in recent years. However, it must be kept in mind that the catalytic nature of this trecena can bring forth events of an entirely different nature, as when the Virgin Mary first appeared to three children at Fatima on a 1 Kawak day in 1917, causing a tidal wave of anticipation as people began to amass to be present for her prophesied future appearances.
Other events of significance that have occurred within this Kawak trecena include the formation of the New England Hurricane of 1938 that damaged or destroyed over 57,000 homes and became the costliest and deadliest in New England history; the series of devastating tornadoes that left a major swath of destruction across Florida in 2007, at the same time that over 40,000 people were being evacuated from Jakarta, Indonesia as many parts of that city were inundated by neck-high floodwater in the worst flooding since 2002; and the departure of the last full U.S. combat brigade from Iraq when they crossed the border into Kuwait, in August of 2010, on a Tzolk’in anniversary of 1944’s D-Day.
During the last appearance of this trecena, in May of 2011, a number of significant events occurred, including the beatification of Pope John Paul II at a mass attended by some 1.5 million people in St. Peter’s Square, on the same day that Osama bin Laden was killed in a dramatic U.S. CIA-led commando raid in Pakistan; the “flood of the century” in the Brandon, Manitoba region; and the earthquakes that hit the centuries-old city of Lorca, Spain that injured hundreds and left thousands homeless. Let’s hope that the deities of this trecena have “settled down” a bit, so that this time around they bring blessings (as part of their promise) rather than destruction. During this time frame these are the energies that will come into play (days of particular importance are highlighted in red):
1 Kawak (Jan. 15th ) – the “initiation” of “the catalytic storm”, the beginning of the trecena
2 Ajaw (Jan. 16th) a dynamic type of energy aligned with the full sun, full power, and the idea of
“enlightenment” as was in place at the time of Pope John Paul II’s beatification mass last year; this
year this ties in with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. - an interesting juxtaposition because 2 Ajaw is
the birth energy of Rosa Parks, who has been called “the mother of the freedom movement”
because of her refusal to give up her seat on a bus to make room for a white passenger in that
famous incident in Alabama in 1955 (which took place on a 3 Ajaw day)
3 Imix (Jan. 17th) - the “activation” of “birth” or the realm of all potential; it can also bring chaos as
happened when Harper’s Conservatives won a majority under this influence in 2011, which caused
a huge shake-up in Canadian politics as the NDP became the leaders of the opposition for the first
time ever and the Liberals and Bloc Quebecois suffered huge losses
4 Ik’ (Jan. 18th) the “defining” of wind/breath/spirit – the famous “Singin’ in the Rain” dance
sequence took place under this influence in 1951
5 Ak’b’al (Jan. 19th) the “pinpointing” of deep esoteric mysteries; in 2009 under this influence
CERN’s Large Hadron Collider accelerated to the highest level ever achieved (up to that point) as
part of a test to “unlock the secrets of the origins of the universe”
6 Kan (Jan. 20th) – a “six directions” type of energy aligned with “youthful vitality”; the energy that
turned Katrina into a Tropical Storm in 2005 at the same time that it triggered an extreme solar
geomagnetic storm that began at 2:12 a.m. EDT and sent a large wave of electrons and protons
towards the earth
7 Chikchan (Jan. 21st) - this “7 Serpent” (self-generating Liberation/Lifeforce) day is the daysign of
Chicomecóatl, the Aztec Goddess of agriculture (especially maize) which aligns this day with the
more positive aspects of this time frame, with its potential for providing the conditions that are
favorable for bringing forth nourishment; in 1944 this coincided with D-Day, when 160,000 Allied
Forces landed in Normandy, with the support of over 12,000 aircraft and 6900 vessels (including
hundreds of combat vessels), launched the greatest amphibious assault in history
8 Kimi (Jan. 22nd) – a “resurrection” type of energy associated with “death” or “absolute spiritual
foundations”, as seen in 2004 when the enormous memorial mass and funeral was held in Madrid
for victims of the train bombing; on that same day a decision was made to kill 365,000 chickens in
Fraser Valley to eradicate Avian flu. That was also the day when Microsoft was fined $13 million,
on this 68th Tzolk’in return of the energy that was in place at the birth of Bill Gates.
In 2009 a Shaman’s Congress began on 8 Kimi at Tiahuanaco (north of La Paz) involving
indigenous spiritual leaders from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras,
Mexico, and Peru.
9 Manik’ (Jan. 23rd) – an “outwardly projecting” type of energy associated with reciprocity,
coinciding this time with the New Moon and Chinese New Year, at the beginning of Chinese
Lunar Year 4710, that brings in the Year of the Water Dragon – a highly auspicious year
associated with high magic, great good fortune, and the ability to reach heavenly heights – adding
another layer of mystery and intrigue to 2012
10 Lamat (Jan. 24th) – “foundational bright star” - a foundational “signalling” type of energy; as seen
in August of 2010 when the 33 miners trapped in the Chilean mining cave-in signalled that they
were alive
11 Muluk (Jan. 25th) – the “change” in conjunction with “water” energy described above with regard
to many intense water related events, such as Hurricane Katrina
12 Ok (Jan. 26th) – a “grouping together” energy associated with love, warmth, guidance; John F.
Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier were married under this energy influence
13 Chuwen (Jan. 27th) – “transformational monkey” – a highly creative “time weaving” type of
energy; it was a 13 Chuwen day in 2007 when the world’s top climate scientists announced
that climate change has been “firmly attributed to human activity”, as they called for drastic and
immediate action to address the issues associated with global warming. In their view this will be
the “biggest story of the 21st century.”[Please note that the brief descriptions of the days provided above are only “thumbnail sketches”. Much greater detail can be found in Manual for the Soul: A Guide to the Energies of Life.]
