As described in Manual for the Soul, A Guide to the Energies of Life, the 260 day cycle that forms the foundation for the Mayan Calendar is comprised of 20 trecenas (weeks), each containing 13 days. Within Mayan Calendrics each of the days represents a unique energy with a special meaning. Each of the trecenas has a theme, with the name of the trecena being reflective of the first day of the time frame.
The Manik' Trecena: Nov. 24-Dec.6, 2011

The Manik’ (Deer) trecena that begins on Nov. 24th seems to be well timed this year as it coincides with the beginning of the U.S. holiday season marked by their Thanksgiving festivities on this day.
Aligned with the resources of the earth, Manik’ is depicted within Maya tradition as a hand holding the sun, and within Aztec tradition as a Deer or Stag. There are a number of important ideas associated with Manik’, often associated with the provision of sustenance or aligned with the idea of reciprocity or working towards bringing balance back into various situations. As the first day of this trecena (One Manik’) represents the initiation of this type of harmonization, it may serve families well as holiday dynamics are being negotiated.
In conjunction with this, the overall theme for this 13-day time frame is Sacrifice and Reconcilation, which suggests that a considerable amount of “give-and-take” may be required in order to achieve the potential of “sacred balance”. Fortunately, one of the main patrons of this time frame is a deity who is oriented towards the erasing of transgressions, so this may be a good time to seek forgiveness or pardon for past issues. There are many examples in the past where this energy has, indeed, brought forth such things as ceasefires and important negotiated agreements in world events.
In January of 2009 it was One Manik’ that kicked off the celebrations surrounding the inauguration of President Barack Obama, with his formal inauguration taking place on 3 Muluk, the third day of this time frame, which just happened to be an anniversary of the Maya birth date of George Washington, as well as a return to the energy that was in place (precisely 65 Mars cycles earlier) on the day when the 15th Amendment to the U.S. constitution granted the right to vote to African American men. Exactly one cycle plus two days (260 days + 2) later, in October of that year, the announcement was made that Obama was to be awarded the Nobel Peace prize for his efforts to bolster international cooperation among world leaders.
Other major events that have occurred under the influence of the Manik’ trecena include the surrender of the Confederate army under the leadership of General Robert E. Lee’s to General Grant, precipitating the conclusion of the U.S. civil war in 1865; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s founding of the civil rights oriented SCLC in 1957; the acceptance of the Dalai Lama and his retinue into India after their escape from Tibet in 1959; the declaration of the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. in 1991; and the initiation of the dismantlement of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Unfortunately, however, there is no guaranteed that harmony and balance will always be in place, as there are occasions when the sacrificial aspects of this energy sequence become dominant, as occurred on the last appearance of 3 Muluk (the “activation of water”), last March. That was the day when the massive 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan, sending a massive debris-filled tsunami wave several miles inland, which killed thousands of people and caused billions of dollars in damage. In many ways this was similar to the situation in China in 2008 when thousands of children died in collapsed schools when a devastating 7.9 earthquake struck the Szechuan area on a 10 Kib’ day near the end of the Manik’ trecena. With close to 5 million people left homeless, a huge army of hundreds of thousands of volunteers were involved in providing assistance. By “coincidence” it was a 10 Kib’ day in 2011, exactly 4 cycles after that Szechuan earthquake, when Japan observed a minute-of-silence in memory of the victims of their own massive earthquake and tsunami that had struck just one week earlier.
Although it is not possible to predict the exact nature of the “Sacrifice and Reconcilation” that may unfold during the forthcoming 13 days, a look back at the nature of the various pushes towards transformation that occurred during the past 13 days (during the Ix trecena) may suggest where some of the focus may be placed. That time frame brought forth a major “Day of Action” by those involved in the “Occupy” movement in various U.S. and Canadian cities, the resignation of the Italian Prime Minister after 17 years in power, a major change of power in Spain, an increase in tensions and hostilities in Syria, and the resumption of major clashes between civilians and the ruling military junta in Egypt. It will be interesting to see if any kind of balance or “reconciliation” of differences with regard to any of these issues will be forthcoming during the next two weeks.
As usual, these are examples of large-scale events that have occurred under these influences. Similar types of forces are likely to have influence on personal levels as well. As this current trecena unfolds, these are the energies that will come into being (days of particular importance are highlighted in red):
1 Manik’ (Nov. 24th) – the “initiation of reciprocity”, the beginning of the trecena; U.S. Thanksgiving
2 Lamat (Nov. 25th) – a “dynamic heralding” (or leadership) type of energy, this time combined with
the New Moon and a partial solar eclipse in the southern hemisphere; the Maya birth energy of
Elvis Presley
3 Muluk (Nov. 26th) – the “activation of water”, often a powerful “shape-shifting type of force.
Slated this year to be Small Business Saturday, the day that promotes support for small businesses
4 Ok (Nov. 27th) – a “defining” Burner Day representative of fire or (heart-fire); this particular
energy can often stir the emotions as it is representative of the fire of the sun combined with fire
(the explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant happened under this influence last March)
5 Chuwen (Nov. 28th) – a “precision” oriented energy in combination with play or even mischief; a
“timeweaver” type of energy that can bring change – certainly a possibility in Egypt, where the
first stage of their parliamentary elections are slated for this day
6 Eb’ (Nov. 29th) – representative of “restorative vitality everywhere”; also the “seating” (beginning)
of the Maya calendar month called Mak, representative of the Wind God, suggestive of an
excellent time for communication and negotiation
7 B’en (Nov. 30th) – a “self generating personal authority” type of energy, as in General Robert E.
Lee’s surrender in 1865 (noted above); the first Tweet by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey in 2006;
and the beginning of the Syrian revolution in March of this year (exactly one cycle ago)
8 Ix (Dec. 1st) – “resurrecting Jaguar” – this is Santo Mundo, a special Maya day devoted to the
Celebration of the Earth and its sacred mysteries
9 Men (Dec. 2nd) – the “outward projection” of vision (as in the high-flying vision of the Eagle)
10 Kib’ (Dec. 3rd) – a “foundational restoration” type of energy which can fluctuate between the
setting up of important foundations (as in the setting up of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty in
1968) to the kind of massive “cleaning up” that was required in China in 2008 and Japan in 2011
(as mentioned above)
11 Kab’an (Dec. 4th) – the energy of “change” combined with the force of evolutionary movement
12 Etz’nab’ (Dec. 5th) – a powerful “knife-edge” type of force that can bring forth powerful
separation (or “sacrifice-related”) events, as in the execution of Anne Boleyn in 1536 and the
assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865
13 Kawak (Dec. 6th) – “transformational storm”, a highly intense force that has coincided with a
number of devastating natural disasters such as the 9.2 earthquake in Alaska in 1964 (the most
powerful ever recorded in North America), and Hurricane Dennis that caused billions of dollars
worth of damage across four states in 2005. As of this day in 1991 (which coincided with Dec. 31st
of that year) all official operations ceased after the Soviet Union was declared dissolved.
