Maya Calendar Energies At Work In The World

The Maya date was 4 Ajaw 3 K’ank’in, equivalent to Dec. 21, 2012 – not the “end” of the calendar, but the completion of the 13th Bak’tun, a key date that marked the beginning of a new Great Cycle of Time. As always, the energies encoded in the calendar continue on. As described in Manual for the Soul, A Guide to the Energies of Life, the 260 day cycle that forms the foundation for the Maya Calendar is comprised of 20 trecenas (weeks), each containing 13 days, each of which represents a unique energy with a very special meaning. These energies as they manifest, at work and at play, are the focus of this blog.

Red and gold, red and gold, everywhere red and gold – lanterns, pom poms, streamers, firecrackers – red envelopes with “lucky money”, lion dances, special treats – all are making their presence known as the Chinese Spring Festival gets underway. This year Chinese New Year is being celebrated as the Year of the Dog, coinciding at this time with the Read the full article…

Water – cleansing, nurturing, refreshing, lifegiving –  don’t we all need more of that these days? “Oh sacred water – we come to you with great reverence and appreciation . . . . (from “We are Protectors of the Water”) Keeping the focus on these kinds of positive aspects of water, we can see that this water-oriented Muluk trecena will Read the full article…

Here it comes again – that “echo effect”, but this time the ante is upped. Early last May the end of the Ak’bal’ trecena saw U.S. lawmakers scrambling to pass a spending bill to prevent the government from shutting down, with many of the White House’s key demands being excluded when the bill was pushed through just before this Kib’ Read the full article…

DARKNESS – for many this is a fearful thing – a time of harshness, severeness, a time of mystery, a time when things hidden come to the fore and find their expression. For others darkness is an embrace – a time when the hubbub of the world is temporarily halted and momentary rest provides a chance to regroup, a respite Read the full article…

After a rough (or downright devastating) 2017 for many, the Ok trecena – generally aligned with Love, Loyalty, Warmth, and Guidance – will carry us from Christmas on through the first few days of the New Year. Traditionally the first day of this energy period was celebrated as an ancient Feast Day of Renewal, oriented around the idea of guidance, Read the full article…

In a fast-moving world that seems to make less and less sense as the years roll by, it becomes increasingly clear there are certain “trigger points” within the Tzolk’in cycle that seem to intensify activities and propel action forward. The Kab’an trecena is one of the most critical as this was seen, historically, as a time of both completion and Read the full article…

Late November and the light continues to dwindle in these northern regions, echoing what seems to be a fading light in the world at large. At this time of year many are steeling themselves for the onslaught of winter, knowing that over the next few months there will be many “hunkering down” days necessitated by freezing rains, icy winds, and Read the full article…

What is it/who is it that sits at the centre of the Tree of Life and weaves creation together? In Maya cosmology it is the playful, inventive, agile, and capricious Monkey deity who pulls the threads together and orchestrates the proliferation  of life. And it is this deity’s special Day of the Monkey, the key mid-point within the overall 260-day Read the full article…

The snow falling outside on this day is signalling that summer is definitely over.  Nevertheless, things seem to be heating up rapidly, especially given the indictments that are now appearing with regard to the Russia probe in the U.S., and the “civil war” types of rallies that are currently being planned. To boot, we now have the Etz’nab’ trecena coming Read the full article…

Emergence, liberation, and the triumph of lifeforce over death – these are forces that tend to factor strongly into the context of the Chikchan trecena. Within the 260 day cycle the beginning  of this trecena marks the start of the third 52-day period, a time often associated with both justice and “awakening”. At the moment the need for liberation and Read the full article…
